What could be better than driving along what seemed like a road of emptiness, and spotting, in amongst the autumn trees, the sign and emblem – of a fish and chip shop?
Today I travelled from Cheltenham to Bredon, to try what I had heard was the best fish and chips in the local area.
Bredon is a small village just outside of Tewkesbury, a rural community with one main road.
If you turn off Kemerton Road onto Station Drive, on your left you will find Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop.
The steampunk décor offers a modern and innovative vibe to the premises, a fridge full of refreshing cold beverages and a reassuring display to say that Bredon accept cash, and card.
Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop offer an excitably extensive menu, from the fried and gooey delight of a battered mars bar to the crisp and the sour of frickles (fried pickles).
If you are broadening your palate from your regular cod main, you are spoilt for choice for an alternative (from sea bass and king prawn to chicken katsu curry and chilli).
I opted for the classic regular sized cod and a cone of chips, with plenty of salt and vinegar -costing a more than reasonable price of £9.30.
When chatting to the owner, Jason Pollard, he informed me:
“We took over on the 1st of August and signed the lease on the 23rd of October.”
Jason also explained that customers from the local villages have been visiting Bredon to sample the food.
After I returned to my car, I opened my box of fish and chips and was impressed by the portion size: plenty of chips and a hefty cod that greeted me from below.
I tried a few chips first, which all varied in shape and size, and was overwhelmed by the quality and taste of the chips; dare I say the best chip shop chips I’ve ever had?
I then tucked into the main event, the cod: hearty, golden crispy batter, melting in the mouth.
Kirsty Holliday, from Walton Cardiff, commented on the chips:
“There really is a perfect consistency of seasoning and quality, despite difference in size.”
If you’re not tempted by this fantastic fish and chip shop already, there is also free parking and picnic benches for when the Great British weather allows us to indulge in one of the nation’s delicacies.
If you’re tech savvy and want to escape the queue, you can download their app and order to collect.
I highly recommend Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop, it’s certainly a hidden gem and more than worthy of a visit.
