JOAN Herbert, with 33 points, won the Veterans’ Cup at The Worcestershire Golf Club by a single stroke from Sue Boardman.

The Novices’ Cup, for those players who have not achieved a handicap lower than 30, was won by Brenda Lowe with 26 points.

The 18-hole competition was won by Liz Evans, who reduced her handicap to 12 with a splendid 36 points, while the nine-hole winner was Barbara Teale with 15 points.

Elsewhere at the Malvern Wells-based club, the second round of the EW Evans Centenary Trophy was played in fine weather on a course which was playing long with a CSS of 73.

In Division One, Jason Allies (5hcp) led with the best score of the day, 39 points, with David Fraser (8) on 38 and Phil Park (10) on 37.

Neil Smith (13) led Division Two with 36 points, followed by Cuth McDowell (14) on 33, while John Whitehead (16) was third with 32.

Division Three went to Mike Salmon (19) with 38 points, one ahead of Jan Szymanski (23) and two ahead of Peter Basten (18).

With one more round to come, the leaders in the race to be the first to reach 100 points are Lee Whittall with 72, Allies (71) and five players on 69 — Andy McCabe, Tom Howells, Cuth McDowell, Dave Jones and Roger Brierly.

The final of the better-ball match-play resulted in a win for Phil Shurmer (1) and Nick Smith (5) against Geoff Fox (5) and Brierly (9).

The winners established a twohole lead early on, increased it to three when Shurmer birdied the seventh hole and were four-up after Fox and Brierly conceded the ninth. Although Brierly won the 13th, Smith’s four at the 14th kept the margin at four holes and the match ended on the 15th.

Meanwhile, club captain Jim Wilde led The Worcestershire’s mixed team to a 5½ to 1½ greensome match win at home against Ludlow Golf Club.
