MALVERN Radar hoisted their first trophy for a number of seasons after claiming the Worcester Nursing Minor Cup in dramatic circumstances against Droitiwch outfit Wessie.

The Langland Stadium contest, which Radar won 7-6 on penalties after the game ended 2-2, didn’t finish until 10.55pm due to extra time, the shoot-out and a nasty injury to one of the Wessie players, who thankfully was released from hospital the following day.

The early exchanges lacked any real quality, but it was Wessie who took the lead when leading scorer Alan Parkinson showed some nimble footwork before firing the ball high into the net from 15 yards.

Radar fought back and, five minutes before half-time, Lee Mason directed a header inside the post to level the scores.

Instead of holding things together until the break, Radar carelessly got caught out before the interval when Parkinson once again coolly rouded a defender and Alex Jenkins in the Radar goal to make it 2-1. The second-half started with Radar on top and Wessie keeper Tom Kings pulled off two tremendous saves, firstly tipping Louis Loader’s thunderous volley over the bar and then somehow saving Jon Dovey’s shot at the foot of the post.

The game was then held up for some 45 minutes when Wessie’s Perry Brown was accidently kicked in the head, which saw him knocked out cold and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Although bruised and badly shaken up, Wessie reported he was recovering well.

With 20 minutes still to be played, Radar pushed forward, but sterling defending from Wessie skipper Simon Taylor and James Baker kept them out until the 84th minute when, following a number of scrambles, Mason was on hand again to force in the equaliser.

Parkinson nearly won the game for Wessie in the closing stages, only for Jenkins to deny him with a great save.

There was plenty of huff and puff in extra-time, but no real chances and, after eight penalties each, Mason calmy slotted in the winner.
