TWO village football teams have capped successful seasons by winning a host of silverware.

Welland and Powick both triumphed over their rivals to claim five honours between them during the 2011-12 campaign.

Powick defended their Worcester and District League Saturday Division One title as well as winning the Martley Cup and Worcestershire FA Saturday Minor Cup.

Welland secured the Cheltenham League Division Five championship and bagged the League Minor Charity Cup.

Powick claimed their league crown in the most dramatic of circumstances as they denied VBL Sports, taking the title with a last-gasp victory against their rivals.

VBL only needed a draw to win the league and were 1-0 up with just two minutes left on the clock. However, Paul Edwards equalised for Powick before Chris Grubb grabbed the winner with the last kick of the match to retain the title for Steve Hodges’ men.

Secretary Graham Bird said: “I was absolutely gobsmacked, especially when we went 1-0 down and scored two goals in the last two minutes.”

Just 24 hours earlier, Powick won a remarkable Martley Cup final against Worcester Rangers 8-5 after extratime at Malvern Town’s Langland Stadium.

Trailing 3-0 at the break, Powick pulled two back but Rangers restored their three-goal advantage.

However, Powick struck three times in the final 15 minutes to force extratime when they scored a further three goals.

Stuart Harvey bagged four, while there was two for Ricky Buckland, one for Darren Baker and an own goal.

Having won their league, Welland made it a double by claiming the Minor Charity Cup against Newlands Athletic with a 2-1 victory after extratime at Bishops Cleeve.

In a tense, hard-fought encounter, Welland began brightly and took the lead just five minutes in when Lewis Dixon found James Lush and he fired the ball home at the near post.

However, Newlands’ increasing pressure saw them draw level on the hour and it also needed Welland keeper Niall Hacking to stop them taking the lead.

Chances were few and far between in extra-time and penalties loomed until Dixon headed home Lush’s freekick with the last action of the match.
