THIS year’s winners of the Malvern League Handicap competition are YMCA Vulcans.

In the final, Vulcans destroyed Broadheath Belters by the comfortable margin of 35 points.

Vulcans came into the final with the confidence of a team at the top of Division Two and their players showed their worth against a team a league above them.

In a stirring performance, Beryl Shammon took a point off John Stalker 12-10, 11-8, 14-12, 5-11.

Lukassz Galkiewicz pushed Brett Brining all the way in a scoreline of 5-11, 12-10, 9-11, 9-11.

Then, in the doubles, Galkiewicz and John Cawthra pulled out all the stops before going down to Brining and Michael Siket 7-11, 8-11, 12-14, 7-11.

By the end of the evening, with the help of a handicap of 221 points, Vulcans had gained a deserved victory.

In the secondary competition, Division One winners Manor Park Cavaliers added another trophy to their collection when beating X- Police by a mere eight points.

For much of the evening it looked as though Joe Higgs, Jack Higgs and Trevor Simmons were taking Cavaliers to a comfortable victory, but Toby Wren took a game off Simmons and then Matt White took the penultimate game off Jack 12-10 to leave the match in the balance.

At 4-4 in the last game of the evening, the tie was up for grabs, but Jack reeled off the last seven points to lead his side to a tense victory.

The trophies will be presented at Malvern Rugby Club, Spring Lane, on Friday, May 20.

All are welcome to attend, tickets can be obtained by calling Richard Cullis on (01905) 426442.
