A MALVERN golfer played the game of his life to win the Ross Seniors Open in far from ideal conditions

Ross-on-Wye was one of the hottest places in the British Isles recently with temperatures reaching 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Not exactly ideal conditions for the 174 senior golfers (aged 60+), who descended upon the town for Ross Golf Club's Annual Seniors Open event.

The day is always well supported as it gives visitors the opportunity to test themselves on this course, where all 18 fairways and greens are tree-lined making it one of the most demanding tests of golf in the South West.

All the more remarkable therefore that Jeff Jones, who is a member of the Worcestershire Golf Club, should find the inspiration to play his best round ever.

Jeff, who plays off a handicap of 20 (now 18), could do no wrong and on the day and played to a handicap of 10, which meant that his massive 46 stableford points made him a clear three points winner.

Ross Senior's Open organiser, Keith Ray, congratulated Jeff and commented that his excellent round, which included two birdies, represented the highest points score ever recorded at this event.

One of Jeff's playing partners and fellow Worcestershire GC member, Stan Keyshall, provided valued support and for 14 holes almost matched Jeff's scoring, although Stan's highly creditable 39 stableford points score was just outside the prizes.
