A PAIR of Malvern sailors were part of the Worcestershire School Sailing and Canoeing Association team who competed in the National School Sailing Association Championship Regatta in Oxford. All five sailed consistently within their fleets in the fickle wind, and the overnight standings showed Ali Lucas, aged 18 from Malvern, and Becky Thomas (18) to be leading in the Handicap and Laser 4.7 fleets respectively.
Jim Rosser (18) and Rosie Smith, aged 17 from Malvern, were second in the handicap and topper fleets respectively.
Smith dominated the topper fleet and gained her first win of the weekend on Sunday.
Lucas was announced winner of the handicap fleet, with three first places and a second, and Rosser came second, both sailing Lasers. Smith was announced winner of the topper fleet, to give Worcestershire the overall county title and trophy, meaning the team won four out of five trophies.
The team will attend their next event in the last week of July, together with another 10 Worcestershire County Sailing team members.
This event is the NSSA National Youth Regatta, and will be held in Bridlington, where more than 300 sailors from around the country will take part.
The cost is considerably greater for this event, so the team are looking for sponsorship to help with the costs. For more information, call Vivien Brookes on (01684) 569253.
