CONDITIONS for the second round of the Centenary Stableford at Worcestershire Golf Club made scoring difficult for most competitors who contended with blustery wind and occasional driving rain. The CSS went up to 74 as a result and the race to get to 100 points after the third round on June 6 is still wide open.
In Division Three, Julian Garwood-Gowers (20) had the best score of the day with 38 points, followed by Malcolm Downes (18) with 36 and Keith Shouler (18) with 34.
In Division One, the improving James Gath (11) led with 35 followed by Neville Clarke (6), also 35 and Roy Phillips (12) with 33.
Division Two scores were no better than average with Roger Blackwell (13) leading on 33 from Marc Davies (13), 33, and Andrew Layland (14) 32.
The Alan Courtney Cup, played over 18 holes as a Greensome Stableford was won by Jamie Dunster and Nick Smith (8) with 40 points, decided over the last nine holes over Nick Day (9) and Rob Schooling (13).
Last autumn’s knock-out competitions are slowly drawing to a conclusion. Phil Shurmer (1) and Dave Farrell (8) won by one hole against Andy Dunster (5) and Andy McLelland (8) on the last green.
When Dunster holed from the top of the 18th green for a birdie three, Shurmer showed his mettle by holing for the winning half they needed.
In the other four-ball competition for all-comers, Barry Caswell (11) and John Davies (13) beat Ian Brazier (13) and Andy Price (13) to reach the final.
The first mixed match of the season was against Ludlow, away last Sunday, and although nine matches got started the wet weather had the last word and the match was abandoned.
