MALVERN LEAGUE DIVISION THREE.

X–POLICE were a player short but still managed to get two points from their match with Abbeydowne thanks to three singles wins from Steve Mulka and his winning the doubles with Alan Holmes who also picked up a singles set. Peter Denniss and Bill Lucas each won one for Abbeydowne.

Maulers and Nomads were fighting for the title when they played against each other.

Six sets went to four games and two of them to five and 11 games went beyond nine-all. The first six sets were won by alternate teams so that when they reached the doubles they were three sets all.

Nomads won this by 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11 and 11-9. At this stage Ray Davies had scored two for Maulers and Dave Hays two for Nomads. Bill Smith was the next player to win for Maulers followed by Kevin Howard winning for Nomads. The final set of the evening was between Davies and Hays. The former had lost just two sets in the whole season and Hays just one. The first game went to 15-13 before Davies won it.

The second was quite easily won by Hays to seven but then he took command and won both of the other games to seven, giving both teams two points for the draw.

In the very last match of the season between Manor Park Crackpots and Nomads the divisional situation could barely have been closer. Nomads needed a four-point win to come top of the division but if they took three points they would be equal with Maulers on points but with a worse game difference. On the night Stephen Lindner managed to beat Kevin Howard and Adrian Fray to give his team one point but Hayes won all his sets in straight games.

MANOR PARK MAULERS 5, DUKES WAY DYNAMOS 4.

(Pete Harrold Competition division three final).

THE final of the Third Division Pete Harrold competition again saw Maulers in action. In this event three players each play two singles and two doubles with the doubles pairing being different. In addition each player has an individual handicap.

Ray was the best singles player, winning both his sets and Bill Smith and Don James each won one and they won their doubles. For Dynamos, Alison Sage was in great form winning both her singles and both of her doubles. Five of the nine sets needed extra games but by just five sets to four Maulers managed to pull off the third division double.
