LEDBURY u11s’ campaign ended on a winning note when they were crowned victors at an end-of-season tour match against Exeter Chiefs in Torquay.
With a squad of 24 players, it was decided to play a game of four quarters to give everyone a run-out.
The first score of the first quarter saw Ledbury’s George Hemingway crash over the line and Will Butler kicking his first conversion of the day.
Hemingway grabbed his second touch down, which was also converted by Butler, to give Ledbury a 14-0 lead.
The Chiefs exploited a number of missed Ledbury tackles in midfield at the start of the second period to score an early try which was successfully converted. This was followed by a second score for the hosts.
Ledbury gradually began to acclimatise to the pace of the game and the pack were beginning to edge the forward battle.
The visitors scored through Dan Smith, who took the conversion himself, after being fed by Penny Green.
Late Ledbury dominance paid off as Ben Stevens scored, converted by Smith, for a 14-14 scoreline.
The visitors took the third quarter 12-0 through tries from Charlie Samwells and Ben Savidge. Butler missed one of his two conversion attempts.
The final quarter followed a similar pattern to the second with the home side running the ball from the angles and exploiting gaps in the Ledbury defence to score two converted tries.
Ledbury’s play was overshadowed by an injury to Smith, who was OK after being taken to hospital for precautionary tests.
The visitors ultimately ran out 40-28 winners across the four periods.
