AFTER success in the Wyvern Junior League final, Ledbury Swimming Club were looking forwards to making their debut appearance in the first round of the Nuneaton Junior League Division Two and came away with second place.
The first round was held at Tamworth pool last Saturday, when they competed against Boldmere ‘B’, Hickley, Lichfield, Tamworth and Nuneaton and Bedworth ‘B’.
Keen to make a good start, Ledbury, chalked up 16 top-three places in the first 20 events to help the team secure a well-earned second place.
Determined to keep the leading team Boldmere ‘B’ within reach the Ledbury team increased their attack. Over the following 20 events Ledbury managed to secure a further 19 top-three places. These races included the eight by 25-metre girls relay, with two girls from each age group competing. Lydia Freeman and Immie Best were joined by Millie Park, Caitlin Adair, Bethan Hiley, Calypso Harvey, Gemma Laing and Laura Quigley. All of the girls swam superbly to ensure a well-deserved second place. After 40 events Ledbury had managed to decrease the gap between them and first place team Boldmere ‘B’ to only eight points going into the final 11 events.
The last section gave the boys a chance to impress with their eight by 25m freestyle relay. Jamie Hiley and Eric Harris made a great start to the race giving the boys an early lead. Oscar van Vuren, Joshua Beck, Charlie Docherty, Mitchell Willson, Alex Middleton and Bradley Willson also put in superb swims to ensure that the team finished in first place.
The final race of the day was the much anticipated eight by 25m mixed freestyle relay, with Ledbury running out as winners by over 15 metres.
