A stellar spell from Ethan Brookes produced glimpses of brilliance for Worcestershire before the day was brought to a premature close due to bad light and rain.

Brookes delivered nine overs, producing figures of 2-24, as Worcestershire fought back on day two of the Vitality County Championship derby against Warwickshire at Visit Worcestershire New Road.

The all-rounder's efforts helped reduce Warwickshire from 76-1 to 112-4 before play was suspended at 2.15pm.

Early in proceedings the Pears secured a second batting point before their first innings ended on 307 after exactly 100 overs, completing a brilliant comeback from 67-4 on opening morning.

Youngster Jack Home, making his Pears Championship debut after signing a three-year contract with the club this week brought about the 300, pulling Chris Rushworth for consecutive boundaries.

However Rushworth then claimed two dismissals in the space of three balls,

The Pears stabilised with a 65-run stand between Taylor and Home, which ended when the latter was trapped lbw for 29.

Amar Virdi was bowled two balls later to leave Taylor unbeaten on 36 from 49 balls.

He claimed the crucial wicket of Bears captain Alex Davies (58), who became the first player to score 1,000 runs in Division One this season.

Brookes also dismissed Will Rhodes and consistently troubled the Warwickshire batsmen on a pitch of variable bounce.

Tom Taylor also had an impressive opening spell, which saw him repeatedly beat the bat with figures of 6-1-22-1.

He made the first breakthrough when Rob Yates was caught off a leading edge.

Brookes said: "Very pleased with the game situation considering we didn’t bowl our best in the morning session.

"Having a chat at lunch-time, you always get another chance to put it right and coming out afterwards to get a wicket first ball….and you saw my excitement levels at getting that wicket.

"It was brilliant that we could get three good wickets after lunch.

"I felt in good rhythm bowling today.

"Alex Davies is the man in form, a 1,000 runs and the season is not even done yet, so that was a huge wicket."
