MALVERN Mavericks remain on course to win the Gloucestershire Basketball Post-Christmas division after a comprehensive victory over local rivals Leadonites on Friday night.
Playing at Malvern St James Sports Hall, visitors Leadonites (from Ledbury) took the lead with the first basket of the night, but from then on, it was a confident, efficient display from Malvern.
They consistently found ways to score against their opponents and romped to a big 25-point victory by 91-66.
The win means Mavericks remain unbeaten in the post-Christmas league, with three wins from three. They have two games left and, should they manage to win both of those, they will be crowned champions.
Their next game takes place vs the Cheltenham Hawks on Thursday March 7 before they conclude their league campaign away at Bears, who are currently top of the table having played a game more than Mavericks.
As for the Leadonites, Friday was always going to be a big challenge for them. They had won just one game in the post-Christmas league coming into the clash with the Mavericks and the defeat leaves them second-bottom of the table with one win from four.
Their league season will conclude with an away game at Kings and a home match-up against Old Spots.
Following the conclusion of the league campaign, all sides in the Gloucestershire Basketball League - both Division One and Division Two, will compete in the Dexter Dawson Cup.
The Mavericks are in Pool B with the Leadonites, Bears and Old Spots. Hawks, Kings, Sharks and UoG Kings make up Pool A. Those matches get underway in April.
