FORMER Worcester Warriors centre and homegrown talent Ollie Lawrence has capped a superb season with Bath after picking up the Player of the Season award at the Premiership Rugby end-of-season awards on Wednesday night.
Having departed Warriors back in October due to the club being placed in administration, 23-year-old Lawrence joined Bath on an initial month-long loan, which was eventually turned into a longer-term deal.
He made 12 appearances for Bath in the 22/23 Gallagher Premiership campaign, scoring five tries, including the one that secured Bath's place in next season's Champions Cup on the final day vs Saracens on Saturday.
Alongside fellow Worcester academy product Ted Hill, the Worcester duo have helped guide Bath from the bottom of the league towards the start of the season to end the year in eighth. Lawrence also played four of England's five games in this year's Six Nations.
Hill was named Bath's Forward of the Year at the club's own end-of-season award ceremony last month.
And given the start to the season both endured at Worcester, it makes Lawrence's achievement that bit more impressive.
He beat the likes of Saracens and Sale fly-halves Owen Farrell and Rob du Preez and Leicester back-rower Jasper Wiese to the award.
"They (Bath) gave me a second chance, looking at my career and seeing what I wanted to do with it. I think the hunger and the motivation for me was to be one of the best players in this country and in the league," Lawrence said.
"I've been given an opportunity and I couldn't not take it. I just threw myself in there. I was fortunate that I had some really good friends at Bath so that settled me in quite well.
"That desperation of knowing that I could not have a job at all - some of my best mates still don't now. So then to be here now is pretty special."
Saracens' Mark McCall was named the league's director of rugby of the season, after he led the club to the top of the table.
London Irish flanker Tom Pearson won the breakthrough player of the season award after helping the club to fifth place - their highest place in the table since the 2008-09 campaign.
