WHENEVER the subject of running quick singles is mentioned on Sky Sports or Test Match Special, the commentators always bring up the name of Roger Tolchard - without fail.

He was renowned for being quite simply the arch exponent of stealing impossible runs in his playing days for Leicestershire and England For the past 22 years since giving up professional cricket, he passed on his expertise to generations of young cricketers in his capacity as coach at Malvern College.

It is quite fitting, therefore, that an exciting new concept in school boy cricket will now bear his name as his innings as cricket coach at the college has come to a close.

Taking its inspiration from the recent success of the TWENTY20 version of the game, Malvern College is hosting a day EIGHT8 for Prep schools.

This form of cricket involves a lot of scurrying around and the pinching of quick singles, a facet of the game close to Roger's heart.

On Sunday, June 17, ten prep schools will be competing for the Tolchard Trophy, which will involve some 100 boys in a series of quick matches of eight overs a side.

Refreshments will be provided with picnic areas for spectators and the teams will be wearing special coloured kit.

An exciting day is expected and the event will climax with the Tolchard Trophy being presented to the winning school by Lord MacLaurin, the former chairman of the English Cricket Board.
