TEAM TriUK triathlete Rhys Davey enjoyed success at the Malvern Triathlon.
The Upper Welland teenager won the youth race and came fourth, seven seconds behind third place, in the overall competition.
Davey, who is studying for his GCSEs at Malvern College, was on familiar territory as he swam 16 lengths in the college pool before setting off on the demanding 25km cycle and 5km run.
Although the overall field was reduced this year, the top youngsters in the West Midlands were competing so concentration and determination was necessary throughout the event.
Davey had a reasonable swim, an excellent bike section, taking more than two minutes off his previous time, but struggled on the run as he had used all of his water after the bike ride.
"It shows how important maintaining water intake is in this sort of race," he said. "I started getting cramp in my shoulders and upper body on the run but, knowing that I had such competition to beat kept me going as well as I could. I am really pleased with the result."
Davey won £20 gift vouchers for Echelon Cycles and a Craft Rucksack.
