MALVERN Chess Club finished their Worcester County League campaign amid fixture congestion with matches against the stronger clubs falling together late on.

Good victories over Redditch and Worcester were countered by defeats against eventual winners Droitwich St Johns, last year's champions Halesowen and rivals Kidderminster.

Having been up with the leaders for most of the season, Malvern eventually finished third.

Highlights of the run-in included captain Ian Clarke's combative draw as a stand-in board one against Droitwich St Johns and a good win over Nick Harris in the return.

There were also fine wins from Denis Spencer against Worcester and Droitwich and a win against a strong Halesowen opponent by Barry Stone.

Peter Yeadon contributed his quota of exciting games and scored valuable points for Malvern.
