COLWALL v STOURPORT

AFTER last week's disappointment at Avoncroft, Colwall responded with this crushing WCL Division Three defeat of Stourport.

Tom Wolfendale's century and Charlie Griffiths six wickets were the foundation of this outstanding performance.

Nick Panniers and David Powell compiled the first century partnership of the Colwall league season, on another of Derek Brimmel's outstanding batting wickets.

In recommended fashion the pair began circumspectly and waited for the loose delivery. At 20 overs the score was 89-0 the perfect platform for building a big total. The opening bowlers were seen off, and the ball softening. When Panniers surprised the spectators by missing a straight delivery and losing his castle.

From the outset Tom Wolfendale looked in majestic touch, in ten overs he and Powell doubled the score, Powell the more patient, Wolfendale the more destructive.

Powell in pulling, popped the ball up to the bowler allowing Pete Butler to join the now rampant Wolfendale, his first 50 came in just 68 balls, his second 50 in just 19 as the Stourport attack fell apart under the onslaught.

Butler decided to join in the carnage taking 28 from one over which included one of the largest 6s of the season so far, straight back over the bowler's head, the sight screen, the hedge and the road. Declaring with four overs to go gave Colwall 54 overs to bowl Stouport out.

Charlie Griffiths struck at once with the dismissal of Niell, bowled between bat and pad. The fielders now gathered around each batsman as it became apparent that none had the technique to deal with Griffiths subtle change of pace and control of spin.

A procession of batsmen came and went, with Griffiths looking to complete a clean sweep as he took the first six wickets. The occasional ball that flashed to the the boundary as desperate batsmen looked to hit their way out of trouble, was an irrelevance.

Mike King upset Griffiths plans by taking two wickets himself and James Wagstaff struck at the end of his only over to wrap up the game.

Colwall collected the maximum 24 points, Stourport 0.
