NEWTOWN SPORTS JUNIORS U14S 4, BROMYARD TOWN U14S 1
WITH an unavoidable fixture four days before the cup final, it was imperative that everyone came out unscathed.
Playing the only side that had denied them a victory this season it was a scratchy first-half performance with the Bromyard defence well on top as Bannister and Preece failed to make an impact. Juniors took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Mallett's free-kick was not held by the keeper and it took three follow-up attempts before Bannister smashed home.
The second half saw a much better Juniors display but Bromyard manufactured an equaliser. The ball bounced over the defence and the winger sprinted clear and lobbed the ball over Kyte, Budd produced a wonder goal line clearance but Hughes' follow-up had just enough to find the net. The match was now end to end with both defences on top but it was to be a lack of discipline that brought the next goal. Bromyard's keeper gathered the ball but needlessly flicked a foot at Preece to see yellow and concede a penalty. Bannister's first effort went wide but an infringement saw a retake with which he made no mistake. This goal was quickly followed by a trademark Preece snapshot that settled it for the Juniors and as Bromyard wilted Bannister scored the goal of the game with a 20-yard curler that flew into the top corner.
Man-of-the-match was Ryan Heeley.
NEWTOWN SPORTS U13 GIRLS 5, FC PHOENIX U13 GIRLS 2
NEWTOWN had Emma Davies playing as a sweeper again, which proved a wise tactical move, as the Phoenix forwards seemed able to beat defenders at will.
It was against the run of play that Newtown scored twice within five minutes, Sophie Loader setting up Elle McBain for the opening goal and scoring the second herself.
Elle McBain made it 3-0 with a thumping volley just after half-time. Phoenix pulled one back when none of the five Newtown defenders in the penalty area closed down the player on the ball, and she was allowed to pick her spot. When they came back to 3-2 it seemed as though Phoenix were in the ascendancy, but Newtown extended their lead with a low hard drive from Georgina Davies before Elle McBain completed her hat-trick, as Phoenix began to tire, capping what has to be the team's best result of the season.
CRADLEY SPORTS CLUB 0, DROITWICH 0
IN a game which both sides were well matched throughout provided an entertaining last match of the season.
Cradley had more of the possession in the first half and were unlucky not to score with efforts from Thomas Fairclough. Cradley attacked well with Jack Bilby providing a strong performance in midfield alongside Josh Davies and Ben Finch.
The second-half saw Droitwich lift their game and they were unlucky not to take the lead but keeper Kurt Poppleton pulled off some good saves. With Piers Kirk-Patrick Jones having another solid performance in defence and some productive work in midfield from Ben Finch, Cradley continued to press for a goal which they were unlucky not to get.
The game could have been won either way within the final few minutes with Droitwich hitting the post and then their keeper pulled off a great save to prevent a long range powerful shot from Ben Finch.
