MORE than 200 Scouts from across the Malvern Hills took part in a district camp over the bank holiday weekend.
Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and leaders gathered at Warren Oak, the district campsite at Staplow, north of Ledbury, from Friday, April 29 until Sunday, May 1.
They took part in a wide range of activities including making camp fires, air rifle shooting, archery, sports and assault courses.
There was also a visit from one of Ledbury’s fire crews, who demonstrated some of the equipment on their engine and cut up some of the larger logs for the camp fire.
On Sunday they were joined by about 70 Beavers, who took part in a “ Mad Hatters Tea Party” to celebrate 25 years of Beaver Scouting.
Maureen Puffett, assistant district commissioner for Beavers and party organiser, said: “The Beavers had a great time and brought the wonderful hats that they had made. With the good weather, it was a fantastic way to celebrate 25 years of Beaver Scouting.”
Another highlight of the weekend was the presentation of the Queen’s Scout Award to Mark Atkinson, who is a leader with 1st Malvern Wells.
County commissioner Derek Barnes, who presented Mr Atkinson with the award, explained: “The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest honour in Scouting and is awarded for outstanding personal achievement. It is achieved by young people who have completed a range of challenges, including service to their community, completing an expedition in wild country, undertaking a five-day residential project in an unfamiliar environment and learning a new skill or developing an existing talent.”
The camp concluded with the annual St George’s Day parade and service, organised this year by 7th Malvern.
Scouting numbers have risen by 27 per cent in the Malverns over the past five years, and more adult volunteers are needed to help out in a variety of roles.
