POPULAR actor Robert Powell will be bringing his portrayal of Fleet Street legend Jeffrey Bernard to the Malvern stage next month.

The star, known for his roles in Jesus of Nazareth, The 39 Steps, The Detectives and Holby City, plays the lead in Keith Waterhouse’s award-winning comedy Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell.

In a life devoted to alcohol, gambling and women, the ever-charming Jeffrey Bernard distinguished himself by excess. From his colourful contributions to the Spectator’s Low Life column, fellow Fleet Street legend Keith Waterhouse created this humorous and occasionally poignant entertainment.

Winner of the Evening Standard’s Best Comedy Award 1990, Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell finds the journalist trapped overnight in his favourite Soho pub. A host of ex-wives, friends and enemies join him in retracing scenes from a life packed with hysterical and absurd incident.

This is the first major revival of the play since Keith Waterhouse’s death in 2009. Peter O’Toole performed in the original production, which premiered in the West End in 1989 to great acclaim and a sell-out run.

It is directed by David Grindley, whose many credits include National Anthems, with Kevin Spacey at The Old Vic and the Olivier Award-nominated and Tony Award-winning revival of Journey's End.

Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell is at Malvern Theatres from Monday to Saturday, May 9-14, and tickets cost from £16.50. To book or for more information visit malvern-theatres.co.uk or call the box office on 01684 892277.
