YOUNGSTERS at Upton Primary School enjoyed a visit from a published poet as a special thank you for their fund-raising efforts.

Children took part in a sponsored spellathon, raising a total of £800 for Mencap.

To say thanks Barrie Wade, a poet who now works for the charity, came into the school and ran a full day of workshops with children from all year groups.

Teacher Sarah Shakles, who organised the event, said: “It was a lovely day and the whole programme was a big success on several different levels. There is all the learning that the children did with their spelling, the fantastic amount of money they raised for Mencap, and all the work we did with Barrie which will hopefully create some super poetry.”
