A PETITION calling on Worcestershire County Council to “save” Malvern Youth Centre has attracted more than 1,500 signatures in just three weeks.

A further 200 signatures have been added this week since the Malvern Community Collective (MCC), a group bidding to take over control of the centre, made the petition available online.

The county council is currently considering options for the future of the centre, in Albert Road North.

MCC wants it to consider handing over control of the facility for it to be run as a charitable community organisation.

Member Jill Terry said the group has now been told that its case will be considered by the council when its cabinet meets on Thursday, May 26.

“This means that they want our full business case submitted by the end of this month,” she said. “Obviously that is a huge undertaking in a very short space of time, but we are pulling out all the stops to get that done.”

MCC plans to hand over its petition at the same time and Dr Terry said members have been delighted with the support they have received.

“It is certainly developing an amazing amount of support from people of all ages,” she said. “It is obviously something that people feel very strongly about. Our target is to get a minimum of 2,500 signatures. If we can do that then the council is obliged to consider our petition.”
