A VERSION of the West End hit musical Billy Elliot is being staged at the Malvern Forum Theatre later this month, following the release of the show to amateurs through the Billy Youth Theatre (BYT) programme.
Only 50 of the 300 schools that applied were chosen to produce it. Five local schools are collaborating in the Malvern production, led by Simon Hundley’s Jago Performers which has provided the majority of the 53 performers.
Harlequin Stage School, Tremor Theatre Company, Mallan Musical Theatre Company and J.A.M. Productions are also involved.
Mr Hundley, is a former member of Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section (WODYS).
In 2004 he played Cookie in WODYS’ production of Return to the Forbidden Planet and the following year was cast as Marius in the group’s smash-hit staging of Les Miserables (School Edition).
He has performed in many other productions, including Carousel and HMS Pinafore, and some years ago produced two pantomimes for his own drama group.
He said: ‘‘The BYT programme means that we can stage our own version of the show, but there is the added possibility of being invited to perform at a regional showcase or a West End gala.
‘‘We had to send some video clips of our rehearsals as part of the criteria and the London producers are busy analysing the se to choose the strongest groups to join one of the extra celebration shows.
‘‘We are all really nervous about discovering whether we will be invited or not, but our show is imminent, so that is certainly keeping our minds off it!’’ Billy Elliot The Musical is on stage at the Forum on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 21-23, at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2pm.
