SCULPTOR Tom Harvey started work this week on transforming the remains of a storm-damaged tree in Malvern's Priory Park into a new community sculpture.
Using a chainsaw, Mr Harvey, will transform the stump of the tree as part of One Big Project 2009.
The project, organised by Malvern Hills District Council together with local teachers, was set up to bring together children and young people from all over Malvern and inspire in them a love of art.
Children were invited to submit designs under the theme ‘water sustains life’, take part in sculpting workshops, and learn about the chainsaw craft.
Manda Graham, the district council's arts development officer, is looking forward to seeing the tree sculpture come to life.
She said: “Tom is an incredibly talented artist. From seeing his previous work and seeing the final design for this project, I can guarantee that the tree is going to look fantastic. I am very excited about watching the design come to life and will be out there daily to see how the sculpture is progressing.”
The sculpture, due to be completed by the end of June, will play a key role in the this year's Malvern in Bloom competition.
