A 64-year-old Rotary member from Colwall will cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats to celebrate the memory of a family friend who died of Motor Neurone Disease.
Roger Hunt is hoping to help raise £20,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association by pedaling the epic distance with his wife, Diane, helping out as part of the four person support crew.
The challenge was inspired by Jim Hutchins who contracted and the died from the disease in little over a year.
Mr Hunt said: “To me this challenge is not only a celebration of a friend’s life, but also my contribution to help find a treatment for this devastating disease.”
MND is a rapidly progressive, fatal disease with no cure. It leaves its victims paralysed and unable to speak and is more common than many of us realise, affecting around 5,000 people in the UK at any one time. MND kills half of those diagnosed within 14 months.
As part of a team of 15 riders, including a number of younger members of his family, Mr Hunt will spend almost two weeks in the saddle between Sunday, June 7 and Thursday, June 18.
Since before Christmas, Roger has clocked up over 2,300 miles in training around the Malvern Hills.
Colwall Rotary Club is supporting the ride as are many of Roger’s fellow Rotarians and other local friends. Those wishing to find out more or to support this cause can visit lejogchallenge.com.
