REPRESENTATIVES from a variety of local groups and authorities met to discuss the logistics of making Church Street, in the centre of Great Malvern, one-way.

The idea was suggested earlier this year by Malvern Town councillor Adrian Ward, who called for it to be investigated as a possible means to reducing traffic problems in the town centre.

Worcestershire County Councillor Penelope Morgan took up the idea, calling a meeting between various interested parties and forming a working group to investigate the matter further.

Technical input from the police, Highways Authority and a traffic consultant working with High Street Malvern has convinced the working group that a one-way system and pedestrianisation would be likely to displace traffic and cause significant problems.

However two possible alternative solutions were suggested.

The first of these is to remove on-street parking in Church Street, widen the shop-side pavement, introduce a 20mph speed limit and provide a designated crossing area with raised pedestrian platforms.

Removing traditional traffic signs and street furniture to introduce a shared space arrangement with similar restrictions was also put forward as a suggestion.

Dan Wild, spokesman for High Street Malvern, said better use of the grounds at Malvern Priory would also greatly enhance the walking experience in the town centre.

“The Priory grounds are a woefully under-used asset for Church Street,” he said. “Improved pedestrian access could be achieved through the churchyard to Abbey Road North by better provision for the disabled.

“Widening and improving the footpath to the Theatres and Priory Park would complete the integration of the Priory grounds.”

The working group’s next meeting is scheduled to take place in July.
