FIFTY cyclists braved strong winds and heavy rain to raise money for type one diabetes by taking part in the first Great Malvern Cycle Challenge on Sunday (May 17).
The event was organised by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF), and money raised will help fund the charity’s groundbreaking research into the potentially life-threatening illness.
Participants had a choice between 20 and 65-mile routes, both starting and finishing at Malvern St James school.
Most riders opted for the more challenging route, although their views of the surrounding countryside were somewhat restricted by the inclement weather.
One of the riders who took part was Worcester Warriors RFC fullback Chris Pennell, who has type one diabetes.
He said: “Having type one diabetes doesn't have to stop you from achieving in sport. In fact, I have found that playing sport and exercising regularly has given me better control over my condition and allowed me to reach my goal of playing professional rugby.”
JDRF spokesman Megan Brown said: “We were delighted that the weather didn’t put people off and we were impressed by the dedication and determination that all the cyclists have shown.
“We are course to have raised over £15,000 through the ride.”
She also thanked Malvern St James for allowing JDRF to use its facilities.
