CHURCH Street will be closed to traffic on Sunday, May 31, when it becomes the course once again for the Edward Elgar Bicycle Challenge.

Now in its fourth year, this uphill time trial is organised by Malvern Fringe and Velo Club Sevale, Malvern's cycling club.

Steve Price of Velo Club Sevale said: "We're just hoping that the weather is better than last year, which was a bit of a washout. We'd like to see 40 or 50 riders taking part this year."

The challenge is open to riders of all ages and all standards riding all machines of any vintage. Prizes have been donated by Argos, Back on Track, Riding High, Echelon Cycles of Pershore and Beacon Property Services.

"The best time so far is 17 seconds, which a rider from the Beacon Club in the Wyre Forest achieved, but a lot of people aim for personal bests," said Steve. "You can have more than one go, so if you don't think your first attempt is your best, go and have a cup of tea and a slice of cake in one of the cafes and have another go."

Registration is from 9.30am outside the former Woolworths, and entry is £1 for adults, 50p for under-16s. There will be a mid-morning break for access to Sunday services at the Priory, and racing will resume at noon until 3pm. Starting on Friday, May 29, this three day event attracts unusual and top quality work by some the best known craftspeople in the county.

Located in the covered arcade at Waitrose, stalls will offer items on sale include jewellery, accessories, clothing, objects d'art, cards, stationery and much more.
