ELGAR’S finest choral work is to be performed at Worcester Cathedral next month by the City of Birmingham Choir and Chameleon Arts Orchestra.
The cathedral will provide a stunning setting for the performance of Elgar’s Dream of Geronitus on Saturday, June 6.
Eminent soloists William Kendall (tenor) William Clements (bass) and Sally Burgess (mezzo soprano) will join a chorus of 140 voices from the City of Birmingham Choir lead by Adrian Lucas, Master of Choristers at Worcester Cathedral.
When he completed his powerful work The Dream of Geronitus Elgar said: “This is the best of me.” The oratorio is based on a poem by Cardinal John Newman and depicts the journey of a man’s soul from his death to his judgement before God.
A copy of the poem was given to Elgar as a wedding present in 1889 but it was not until 1900 that he set the words to music for the Birmingham Triennnial Festival. The premiere was not a success but the work was soon declared a masterpiece. The universal theme and dramatic intensity of the music have made it one of Elgar’s most popular choral works.
The performance starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available from Worcester Live on 01905 611427.
