A QUILT made in memory of a Malvern man who died of breast cancer will be one of hundreds on display at the Three Counties Showground this weekend.

The quilt was created by Pat Lowe, a friend of Pauline Cooper, from The Rhydd. Pauline’s late husband Stephen died of the disease in 2004.

It is part of a collection of quilts with the theme “In The Pink” and is made up of dozens and dozens of pink squares with just two blue squares added in.

The blue squares represent Mr Cooper and his brother, who also died of breast cancer.

Mrs Lowe has also made a second version of the quilt for Mrs Cooper to keep.

She said: “Stephen was a really nice man who always did a lot for people and the local community. It was nice for me to be able to do something in his memory and also to raise public awareness of male breast cancer.”

About 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year, leading to about 40 deaths.

Since her husband’s death Mrs Cooper has been campaigning to increase awareness, and has raised £10,000 for male breast cancer research.

Mrs Lowe’s quilt is on display at Quilt UK’s 2009 Open Competitive Quilt Show in Malvern this weekend. The show is open both days from 10am-5pm and admission costs £8 (OAPs £7, children £3).
