FAMILIAR names will be vying for votes against new-comers with every seat up for grabs at this June’s Worcestershire County Council elections.
The public will go to the polls on Thursday, June 4 and decide who will represent them at county level on issues including education, vulnerable children, roads, household waste, some subsidised bus services and libraries.
Spokesman for Worcestershire County Council Lee Shrimpton said: “Over the last few weeks, hundreds of potential politicians have been canvassing residents looking for the votes that will earn them a seat on the council for the next four years.”
Whether this has paid off or not will be decided by residents of Malvern Langland, Link, Trinity, and Chase divisions, as well as Powick and Croome.
Candidates standing in these areas include those seeking to be elected from the Conservative Party, the Green Party, the UK Independence Party, or the Liberal Democrats. There are no Labour or Independent candidates for these areas.
This election is the first since 2005 when, at a county level, the Conservative Party won 29 seats, Labour won 17, the Lib Dems took eight, while the remaining three were split between Independent Health Concern and Liberal Party Focus Save Our Hospital.
The results of this election will be known by early afternoon on Friday, June 5 and councillors will be sworn in the next day, before any necessary training is carried out.
Mr Shrimpton said: “The new council will meet for the first time at the annual meeting on Thursday, June 25 in the Council Chamber at County Hall.
“This meeting will decide the leader and cabinet of the new administration, as well as who will be the new chairman of the council and other political posts.”
Those seeking to cast their vote by post have until Tuesday, May 19 to get their applications in, while ordinary proxy voters must be registered by Wednesday, May 27.
The winners and losers of this election will be announced on malverngazette.co.uk on Friday, June 5.
