YOUNG people on the lookout for work can benefit from a raft of advice and information thanks to a new initiative being organised by Connexions Malvern and Malvern Library.
Starting on Tuesday (May 19) a new weekly session at the library will allow young people aged 13-19 to drop-in and get advice on all aspects of finding employment.
This will include advice on looking for work, CVs and interviews, and applying for jobs, as well as practical advice about what opportunities are available in the local market.
The new service, available from 1-3pm on Tuesdays, is an extension of existing drop-in sessions run by Connexions at Malvern Youth Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Sheila Jupp, from Connexions, explained: “The library gets a lot of teenagers using it because they have really great facilities for young people.
“They already have quite a good section dedicated to finding jobs and careers, and we have the expertise to offer helpful and targeted advice to the young people. We are running this as a pilot scheme to see how it goes.”
Mrs Jupp said soon-to-be implemented changes to school curriculums would make it even more important that young people have an idea of where they are heading, and the implications of the choices they make.
She added that the advice on offer could help them understand how best to market themselves to employers in a struggling economy when finding a job can be tough.
“I hate to say it but a lot of young people are going to be bottom of the pile when it comes to employers looking for people to take on,” she said. “We can help them to understand what sort of package they can present themselves as to employers.
“There is a lot of doom and gloom out there at the moment but a lot of young people are being incredibly successful.”
