BUDDING young actors and singers were joined by Chairman of Malvern Hills District Council Sheila Young at their rehearsals for the classic musical Oklahoma!

Coun Young donned the obligatory cowboy hat and joined in the fun as the members of Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society’s youth section practised their songs and their steps.

A member of the Youth Forum, a committee involved with the provision of activities for children and young people, Coun Young is involved with youth issues for MHDC.

She watched the youngsters rehearsing the first scene from the musical, which is set in Oklahoma at the turn of the century and tells the story of farm girl Laurey and the two rivals for her affection. Oklahoma contains famous songs like Oh What A Beautiful Morning and I Caint Say No and is a fast moving musical with plenty of comedy.

Coun Young was impressed by the professional approach of the 64 eight-18 year-olds and said: “It’s a pity that children who are disaffected are not involved with such a group. By the very nature of the activity they need to be disciplined and apart from that it’s educational, encourages socialisation and is certainly physical.”

She said she planned to watch the show when the production is staged at the Swan Theatre in Worcester from August 4-8. Tickets will be available from Huntingdon Hall on 01905 611427.
