VOLUNTEER-led organisation High Street Malvern (HSM) is backing calls for a trial one-way system in Church Street.
One of HSM’s long term aims is to produce a feasibility study for a “shared space” system in the town centre.
Shared space is a traffic engineering concept involving the removal of traditional separation between motor vehicles and pedestrian and the removal of kerbs, lines, signs and signals.
The reasoning behind the system is that it will result in improved road safety by forcing users to negotiate their way through shared spaces at appropriate speeds and with due consideration for others using the same space.
Intelligent transport consultant Steve George, who is leading the shared space project for HSM, believes that the results of a one-way trial would provide valuable feedback for the study.
