A MALVERN man aims to give the town its own community radio station, broadcasting a mix of music, news, politics and sport.

John Church, already a broadcaster on a community station in Stourport, hopes to recruit a willing team of volunteers from the local community.

He said: “I think Malvern needs community radio and it would have a lot to offer, being a conduit for news and information on all things Malvern from benefits and council information, to entertainment and community interviews, to promoting tourism in the wider world.”

Mr Church completed a three-month course at the National Broadcasting School, in Sussex, after retiring from running an internet company selling marine accessories in 2006.

He has planned a meeting at the Foley Arms Hotel, Great Malvern, on Tuesday, May 12 to discuss the plan in more detail.

No past experience is needed to help out with the project and full training would be provided.

“It’s to gauge the level of interest in Malvern and to outline my ideas, though in the end any group formed from the meeting will ultimately guide policy. Obviously this isn't a one man affair,” he added.

The station would be broadcast over the internet at first due to the difficulty of obtaining a licence from Ofcom.

Between 20 to 30 volunteers would be required with IT or technical specialists particularly sought.
