MALVERN residents are being encouraged to get involved with a nationwide community initiative called The Big Lunch by throwing street parties this summer.
The Big Lunch, orchestrated by the people behind Cornwall’s Eden Project, is a national initiative to encourage members of the public to enjoy each other’s company and some home-cooked food.
Malvern Hills District Council’s chairman Sheila Young is a big supporter of the scheme, and hopes local ward councillors will encourage residents to organise parties in the areas they live.
A date of Sunday, July 19 has been set for the street parties, and Coun Young hopes that groups of friends and neighbours all across Malvern will join in with the fun.
“I see this as a ‘bring and share’ sort of business, with balloons, hats, street theatre, musical instruments and any other entertainment people might fancy,” she explained. Parties could be held in residential streets, around village halls or on playing fields.
“It sounds like something that could be quite vibrant and a lot of fun.”
Coun Young has already heard from people who are planning on organising a party in their area. She is encouraging others to do the same, and anyone who would like any advice on how to go about it is welcome to contact their local ward representative on MHDC.
The Big Lunch project has been likened to the street parties thrown for the Coronation and the Jubilee, and anyone who would like to find out more should visit thebiglunch.com
