A WOMAN from Ipswich has been able to locate where her grandmother was laid to rest after an appeal for information in the Malvern Gazette.

Alison Burns, of Ipswich, knew that her grandmother Marjorie Hughes died on October 21, 1943, in Redland Road, Malvern Link.

Six months later, her husband died in Italy while on war service, making orphans of the couple's sons Brian, aged seven, and Richard, five. Richard went on to become Alison's father.

"Last year, for my father's 70th birthday, he travelled to Italy to visit the Rome War Cemetery where his father had been buried," she said.

"It was very moving to see photos of my dad at his dad’s graveside after all these years. It got me thinking and wondering about his mother’s final resting place."

She contacted Ivan Willis of undertaker F W Spilsbury, who after finding no mention of Mrs Hughes being buried at St Matthias Church, near her home, or at the town cemetery in Madresfield Road, contacted the Gazette.

And resident Donald Tomlin, read the article and recalled that cremations in those days took place in Cheltenham.

"Within minutes of Mr Willis contacting Cheltenham Crematorium they were able to confirm that my grandmother was indeed cremated and her ashes were scattered in the garden of remembrance. The final piece of the puzzle has been solved.

"My father and I will be visiting Malvern and the Cheltenham Crematorium during the summer.

"Many thanks to Mr Willis, Mr Tomlin and the Gazette for all the help given, I am very grateful," she said.
