SIXTY larger-than-life colourful reproductions of historic angels now adorn the walls of St James the Great Church in Cradley.

The angels, by Yorkshire artist Celia Kilner, cover a period starting in fifth century Egypt, and embrace various religions across the world including Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

The Bishop of Hereford, the Right Reverend Anthony Priddis, launched the church’s Angels Festival yesterday.

Admission is free to the public, although visitors are invited to make donations.

A series of associated events is being organised in conjunction with the festival. These will include concerts – both classical and light hearted, a Hymnathon, an art lecture, a youth talent contest, and a variety of activities involving all the pupils from Cradley Primary School.

The Hymnathon, tomorrow (Saturday) between 10am and 5pm at the church, will feature six local choirs, with free admittance to the public.

The following Saturday (May 16), John Travis will give an illustrated lecture in art, between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

Tickets cost £5, including refreshments, and can be obtained by calling Di Hames on 01886 880647.

Funds raised through the Angels Festival, including through sponsorship of the Angels, is to be used for the refurbishment and adaptation of the church so that it may be more used and accessed by the wider community.
