A SMALL working group will be set up to look at the feasibility of making Church Street, Great Malvern, one way for a trial period.
The proposal comes from coun Adrian Ward of Malvern Town Council, and has been taken up by Worcestershire councillor Penelope Morgan.
Last week, cllr Morgan held a meeting in the town centre, with representatives of the county's highways and traffic management departments of the County Council, as well as police, town council and High Street Malvern representatives.
She said cllr Ward’s proposal was aimed at easing traffic congestion in the centre of the town and making the visitor experience a more pleasant one, and urged those at the meeting to give it due consideration.
At the meeting, it was agreed that a small working group, chaired by cllr Morgan and led by the county’s traffic management staff, would look at the problems with the current traffic system and come up with proposals for improvements.
Cllr Morgan said vehicles had been given priority for far too long and that any solution must ease traffic congestion and make the visitor experience a more pleasant one whilst fulfilling the needs of the local traders for an area where shoppers could browse without being threatened by traffic.
She also called for a short timescale to come up with proposals suitable for public consultation.
