AVID Blue Peter fan Matt Wall had a day to remember as one of his favourite presenters made a surprise visit to his school to present him with his latest badge in person.

Matt was awarded a silver Blue Peter badge, his third in total, after raising £134.50 for Sports Relief with a sponsored bike ride through the Forest of Dean.

He emailed the popular children's show to tell them what he had done, but had no idea that just a few weeks later his lessons would be interrupted by Blue Peter presenter Zoe Salmon.

Although Matt's teachers and his mum Marie had been in secret contact with the BBC show, 12-year-old Matt had no idea what awaited him as he sat at his desk.

"I didn't have a clue," he said. "My mum had told me to get out of the living room a few times recently, and that's when she'd been talking to Blue Peter.

"They recorded around the classroom a bit and then Zoe ran in and surprised me."

Matt, who has been a Blue Peter fan since the age of four and watches or records every edition of the show, also recorded an interview with Zoe, and the piece will be screened some time in the next six weeks.

"It was one of the best days of my life when Blue Peter turned up. I never thought that they would come out and meet me," he said. "All my friends were jealous and wanted to know how I'd managed to do it. I think they will be getting in touch with Blue Peter now!"

As well as his badge Zoe left an autographed photo with Matt as a reminder of his big day, and also offered him some encouragement to follow in her footsteps.

"She told me that I might be a good presenter myself some day, as I sounded confident," said Matt. "That's definitely something I would like to do."
