HEALTHY competition was aplenty at the Grove Junior school this week when pupils created their own version of fruit salad.
Children from year six were split into 11 teams to set up their own fruit salad companies.
Each team had to name its product, decide on its ingredients and advertise it in assembly.
They then made up their salad and sold it to fellow pupils on special stalls in the playground.
School governors were called in to judge the winning dishes on Friday afternoon.
The project was part of the Healthy Schools initiative to encourage children to eat more fruit.
"It was great fun, the children really enjoyed it," said deputy headteacher David Johnson.
"They researched the nutritional and health values of different food, and came up with a product."
He said the exercise was beneficial for children's health and development.
"Year 6 children are at the stage when they're just about to transfer to high school and this teaches them the importance of team working.
"It was fantastic too, because we got all 200 children eating fruit."
The fruit was donated by Morrisons and Waitrose.
