WORK to strengthen a bridge could be an opportunity to uncover some of the grisly secrets of a 17th Century battle, according to history enthusiasts.
Members of a society campaigning for better recognition of the Battle of Worcester believe the remains of thousands of bodies could be buried near a bridge over the River Teme at Powick.
They are now hoping that refurbishment work on the bridge, due to start in mid-July, could reveal one way or another whether the area is a resting place for those killed during the 1651 battle.
Battle of Worcester society member, Bob Jenkins, said: "When that bridge was put in they cut through a lot of skeletons so we are watching the refurbishment.
"We need to know where all the bodies are buried so we can consecrate some ground."
