MALVERN-based technology firm QinetiQ is gearing up to play a big part in a major charity running event.
As well as sponsoring the Acorn's Childrens Hospice Triple Run, taking place at the Three Counties Show-ground on Sunday, July 1, QinetiQ staff will be taking part in the event and even helping out with marshalling.
QinetiQ is donating £5,000 to the Triple Run, which offers participants a choice of three different events - a half-marathon for more serious runners, a 5km fun run where fancy dress and dogs are warmly welcomed, and a special 1.1km course designed specifically for people with special needs.
QinetiQ's Malvern head of site Graham Holmes said the firm was delighted to be sponsoring the event for the second year running.
"Our local support goes mostly to donations for science, engineering and maths projects, but Acorns is close to our hearts because it's a real lifeline for local life-limited children and their families," he said.
Acorns holds special significance for several of the runners from QinetiQ. They include Paul Butler, whose cousin Bev Loader, from Malvern, uses Acorns to help with her eight-year-old son Josh, who is severely disabled after suffering an epileptic fit aged 18 months.
"The support they receive free of charge from Acorns, including nursing, respite and counselling care really helps them cope much better with everyday life," he said.
Vanessa and Chris Staite, from Upton, will accompany their son Matthew around the 1.1km course.
"Matthew has restricted mobility and learning difficulties but because all three races share a start and finish line, we're looking forward to a really great, interactive day and raising urgently needed funds," said Mrs Staite.
Entry for all of the Triple Run events is open until Wednesday, June 13. For details or to register call 01386 554848, e-mail triplerun@acorns.org.uk or visit www.malvernrun.org.uk.
