A DRAMATIC road safety sign should be installed on a dangerous bend that has been the site of multiple accidents, according to a councillor.

Worcestershire county Coun Tom Wells believes shock tactics would help warn drivers about a bend at Old Hills in Callow End where cars often lose control and have previously ended up in people's gardens.

He said: "I would have a sign warning, danger accident blackspot ahead.' A more dramatic sign."

Coun Wells, who is the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said the council had recently resurfaced the road after a number of accidents. But he told villagers at a Powick parish council meeting it was not just boy racers who had crashed on that bend.

He also called for vehicle-activated speed signs, which light up when drivers are exceeding the 30mph limit, to be placed at the entrances to Powick after two similar signs in Callow End had proved successful. He said: "The vehicle-activated speed signs are now in place in Callow End and working rather well. People are taking their foot off the accelerator."

The two signs were installed thanks to a £500 grant from the parish council and a further £5,500 from the county council. Coun Wells said he and Malvern Hills district councillor Stephen Watkins had collected more than 100 signatures from villagers asking for flashing signs to be installed on the A449.

He added: "Stephen and I have campaigned for supportive measures to remind drivers that it's a village and they are driving through the heart of the community."

Powick Parish council chairman Andy Lamb also told villagers one of the parish council's aims this year would be to promote a safe neighbourhood with an emphasis on road safety following some unpleasant incidents.
