A MALVERN man has published a new booklet about the Clerkenwell Markers - iron bollards that can be seen at various points around the town.

Last year, Michael Shiner and fellow Malvern Civic Society member Katharine Barber produced a leaflet containing a guided walk around the markers. And now Mr Shiner has published Boundary Markers of the Clerkenwell Estate, giving more details about them.

The book explains how land bought in Malvern during the 17th century was controlled by the trustees of St James's Church, at Clerkenwell, in London.

The land became more valuable in the 19th century as Malvern grew and the railway arrived, so the trustees had the markers erected around the boundaries of the estate.

Mr Shiner's book includes maps and pictures of all 12 of the surviving markers, and information about Sir George Strode, who made the original purchase back in 1656.

The booklet is available from the Tourist Information Centre, Church Street, and Beacon Books, Worcester Road.
