CCTV cameras will be installed and police patrols carried out in a major crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Malvern's Priory Park and Rose Bank Gardens.

Signs have been put up at the entrances to the park and gardens, and around the Malvern Theatres, which borders Priory Park, notifying the public of the presence of CCTV.

Gordon Morris, manager of Malvern Hills District Coun-cil's street scene team, said cameras could be deployed whenever and wherever they are needed. The first wave will be put up this weekend.

Police will increase foot patrols in the areas, carrying out at least four on Friday and Saturday nights.

The move follows anti-social behaviour during and after the May Day celebrations in the park, and an assault on a man, on Monday, April 30.

Mr Morris said: "The May Day event finished, then at about 10pm, lots more people came in. They must have got glasses from somewhere because we had to clear up a whole lot of smashed glass the following morning."

Malvern beat sergeant Sara Goodman said patrols need to be stepped up ahead of the summer, when more people use the park.

She said the worst times for anti-social behaviour were between 8pm and 9pm, and police needed to be present to quell any trouble.

The council's licensing officers will be making visits to local off-licences to deter the sale of alcohol to underage drinkers.

Any premises caught selling alcohol to juveniles will have their licence reviewed.
