THIRTY young singers from Malvern will be joining hundreds of others in a gala concert at Birmingham's famous Symphony Hall.

The youngsters, members of Malvern Young Voices, are performing at the prestigious venue on Sunday, May 20, at the Worcestershire Youth Music Gala Concert.

Young Voices is a new Malvern singing group that meets on Saturday mornings at Somers Park Primary School. Professional teachers work on students' vocal skills and the singers take part in singing workshops.

"Singing as part of a group is a very exhilarating experience," said Cathy Dew, of Singworks, which set up Young Voices in conjunction with Worcestershire Youth Music, the county council's music service.

"Through Malvern Young Voices we aim to help young people develop a love of singing that will remain with them throughout their lives."

Malvern Young Voices was launched in January and the first term ended with a concert for parents. Symphony Hall, however, will be the singers' first performance at a major event and they will have an audience of over 2,000 people.

"It's an amazing venue and I think our singers will rise to the occasion," said Cathy.

Although only the older members of Young Voices will perform at the gala concert, the group has singing sessions for all ages, from three to five-year-olds (Explorers) right through primary (Discoverers and Adventurers) to the Scholars, a group for older children and more experienced singers.

"The children have a chance to develop their singing voices as well as grow in confidence through performing while singing many different styles of music," explained Cathy.
