SOME time ago, before the transformation of Malvern Theatres, a small oil painting hung for many years in the theatre entrance, roughly where the stairs begin to descend.

This picture was painted by Victor Hume Moody, I think in 1929, and records the people who were instrumental in producing the very first Malvern Festival.

Sir Barrie Jackson and Captain Roy Limbert being among their numbers.

GB Shaw and JB Priestley were also very involved, but I cannot recollect if they are in the group.

I have made numerous enquiries over the years as to its whereabouts as this is not only an important part of the history of Malvern Theatre and its development, but also of the town itself.

Now it has come to light that this painting is actually kept ‘somewhere upstairs’ in the theatre, but as yet I have not been given the opportunity to view it. Victor Moody was a charming and modest man and a great artist.

What a pity that this work is not on display to show our pride in such a work.

At least, please please let it be given due prominence for the duration of the festival.
