A WORCESTER composer will have the honour of hearing his work performed alongside that of Mozart, Beethoven and Britten.

Fitzwilliam String Quartet will play John Gibson’s Quartet number one when they launch the Worcester Concert Club’s 2012/13 season from 3pm on Sunday, October 7, at Huntingdon Hall.

The collaboration dates back two years when the quartet last played the hall and Mr Gibson asked them to perform a small piece of his as an encore.

“They liked it, so they said when they came back they would play the whole thing. I am grateful to them, they are one of the major string quartets and for them to play my piece is astonishing.

“This is its first public performance, it’s very difficult for composers to get their work played unless they are very well known.

“I am delighted, up to then I had composed a dozen or so choral song cycles and a few other bits and pieces.”

Mr Gibson, who describes himself as an amateur musician, is excitedly looking forward to hearing the quartet perform his work.

“My piece has actually got some tunes in it. This is an approachable piece, it’s not a difficult thing to listen to.”

Also on the bill are Mozart’s Divertimento in D, Britten’s Quartet number three and Beethoven’s Quartet in F, while the celebrated quartet are said to offer a varied recital demonstrating many different colours and moods.

The concert is being supported by the Kay Trust in memory of Kathy and Margaret Kay.

Tickets are £15 for adults and £5 for students.
